St. Michael Catholic High School is adding a JV baseball program for the 2017/2018 school year. After an extensive search, the school believes it has found the right coach in its own back yard : Coach Phelps.
Coach Knapstein, St. Michael's Athletic Director, explains his choice:
"Coach Phelps played four years of college baseball, finishing his playing career as a pitcher at the University of West Alabama in Livingston. He's coached baseball previously at both Robertsdale and Shaw High Schools. Over the past several years he's continued to show his love for the game by being an umpire for travel baseball tournaments. "
"Most importantly, Coach Phelps has demonstrated his commitment to our school and our mission. He is actively building “scholars, leaders, and disciples of Christ” in his work with our students both in our physical education classes and on the football field. He is well respected by the young men at St. Michael."
"We also have a lot of kids interested in baseball at St. Michael--they've been playing together this spring in a local recreational league, and they've been doing well. They should serve as the nucleus for competitive teams in the future. "
"Because Coach Phelps is also our head football coach, he will not be our head varsity baseball coach when we begin that phase of our athletic development. We'll continue looking for that coach as we grow in size, " Knapstein says.
Coach Phelps and Coach Knapstein will meet with all families interested in baseball on Tuesday, May 30th. The meeting will be at 6:00 PM in the school cafeteria.
