“On behalf of the Archdiocese of Mobile, our teachers, staff, students and parents, it gives me great joy to welcome you to St. Michael Catholic High School!”
So said principal Faustin Weber to begin the dedication ceremony on Saturday, August 6 in the school gym, and the assembly of over 1200 responded with a sustained standing ovation in thanksgiving for the moment.
Executive Director of Catholic Education, Miss Gwen Byrd, highlighted the many people and committees that had worked over the course of forty years to bring the Catholic community to this day, expressing her gratitude for their unwavering, faithful commitment. Archbishop Rodi explained why he named the school “Michael,” reflecting his desire for students to be leaders for good, to be welcoming of others from other faiths, and to give honor and gratitude to the early pioneers in our Church, especially our first bishop, Michael Portier.
To complete the dedication ceremony, the archbishop walked around the school, sprinkling water in the hallways and classrooms, praying that the school will become a place where students are formed in their hearts and minds for Christ.
Afterwards, the newly formed St. Michael PTO hosted refreshments in the school cafeteria, as visitors toured the new school and its classrooms. “Wow!” seemed to be the most common reaction. “It’s much bigger and grander than I thought it would be!” said others. “I am so excited for the opportunity this gives our kids. God is good!”
