Like many girls her age, sophomore Mary Chappell worried about the transition from a large Baldwin County high school to St. Michael. Would she fit in? Would she be able to handle the academic program? Would she miss her friends? Would she make new friends here?
Now, nearing the completion of her first year, she knows the answers to those questions: Captain of the cheerleading team, president of the house of Portier, a member of the Service Club, enrolled in Honors English, AP Geography, Honors Chemistry and Spanish—she is thriving in her new school.
Reflecting on this change and her experiences, Mary recently wrote a poem, which she gave us permission to share:
Change of Colors, by Mary Chappell
Colors fade as time goes by,
Memories made, not ready to say goodbye.
New traditions, soon to begin
Will I make my mark? Am I gonna fit in?
Regrets may be made
And struggles may occur
The place I once belonged
has become a sudden blur
From a student who came from a big school
To President of a “House,” and enforcing rules
A brand new school with a brand new start
St. Michael is like family; we will never be apart.
My colors have faded and the future lies ahead
But my home is where I am
The Gray, White and Red.
