St. MIchael has hired Mrs. Lisa Ann East to be its second science teacher, beginning in the 2017-2018 school year.
East's career has been distinguished and varied. She worked primarily in the Auburn and Opelika school systems as a chemistry teacher, department chair, and assistant principal. For four years, she served as an instructor and then academic dean for Johns Hopkins University's summer program for talented youth, hosted at Princeton University. She's been an adjunct professor at Auburn University and Southern Union State Community College, teaching Chemistry and Classroom Management courses. Most recently, she's been the academic dean for Cottage Hill Christian Academy in Mobile.
Among her academic qualifications, East has B.S. degree in Science, a M.Ed. in General Science with a concentration in Chemistry and Physics, A.A. certification in Secondary Science (Chemistry concentration), and a near doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching, all from Auburn University.
"We are thrilled that someone of Mrs. East's caliber has joined us, " principal Faustin Weber explains. "She's been one of the premier science teachers in the state for many years, has led innovative, exciting summer programs for talented youth for Johns Hopkins University, and has served as an administrator in both public and private high schools. We believe she'll bring a great deal of wisdom and intellectual gravitas to anchor our chemistry program here."
"I am so excited to be joining the faculty and family of St. Michael in the Science Department and am honored and humbled by this opportunity, " East says. "I look forward to working with Mr. Hall in continuing to develop an outstanding science program that inspires curiosity and creativity, through a rigorous, relevant, and content-rich curriculum."
Mrs. East will likely teach Chemistry and Honors Chemistry to sophomores at St. Michael next year, as well as Biology and Honors Biology to juniors. Together with Mr. Hall, the chair of the science department, St. Michael now has the capacity to teach all subjects and levels of a high school science curriculum, including A.P. Physics, and if students desire it, A.P. Chemistry.
Mrs. East attends Cottage Hill Baptist Church in Mobile.
