Principal Faustin Weber has named John Scimeca as Dean of Students for the 2018-2019 school year. Scimeca’s role will focus primarily on discipline, student scheduling and maintenance of administrative software. He will continue to teach two sophomore A.P. Geography classes.
“We expect over 300 students next year, tripling the size of our first year,” explains Weber, “and as the school grows, we need to continue to build capacity to serve our students and families. Mr. Knapstein, our assistant principal, has been a true renaissance man, handling multiple duties, but as the number of our athletic teams grow, and as we enter into the AHSAA with full varsity programs next year, the management of our athletic program is increasingly complex and time-consuming. So, too, the oversight of day to day student life. Mr. Knapstein will remain our assistant principal, but Mr. Scimeca will share in day to day duties next year.”
“We think Mr. Scimeca is a nice addition,” Weber continues. “He’s a fine young teacher, creative and quick-witted, respected by his students and his colleagues on the faculty. He received good pedagogical training, earning his Master’s from the University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education program, worked for two years as a middle school teacher at Little Flower in Mobile, taught English as a second language in Chile for over a year, becoming fluent in Spanish, and has traveled extensively. I believe the sum of these experiences makes him broadminded, confident and flexible—essential qualities for a Dean of Students. I’m grateful he’s willing to serve the school in this new way.”
“I’m honored to have the opportunity to continue growing as a professional by joining the leadership ranks at St. Michael,” says Scimeca. “It's been a great two years here because of the terrific coworkers, the supportive school community, and the driven, enthusiastic students. It's a blessing to be here.”
John and his wife Caitlin are expecting their first child at the end of March.
