St, Michael Catholic High School is pleased to announce a few new additions to faculty and staff for the 2023/2024 school year!
Coach David Offerle and Coach Simon Cortopassi, both currently on the faculty, will assume the Athletic Director position as Co-Athletic Directors. Both Coach Offerle and Coach Cortopassi are extremely well versed in AHSAA regulations and are outstanding members of our community. Their leadership will be a great addition to our athletic program.
Mrs. Dena Caldwell will take over as our College Counselor and testing coordinator. Mrs. Caldwell has worked as a counselor in the Baldwin County school system for the past twenty-six years. Mrs. Caldwell is a graduate of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School, and she is the mother of St. Michael alumnus, Fairby Caldwell. When asked, Mrs. Caldwell had this to say: "I am honored to begin my journey at St. Michael after retiring from the Baldwin County School System following 26 years of service. My passion is assisting students in developing their future plans and exploring avenues to get them there. I am thrilled to be able to continue working with students and parents in this capacity. I look forward to joining this amazing Catholic community!"
Mrs. Shelly Phillipps will join our faculty to teach in our Social Studies department, where she will take over our AP Human Geography course, and restart our Latin program. Mrs. Phillipps has thirty years of teaching experience, and has previous Catholic school experience. Her expertise will be beneficial as we bring Latin back to our Foreign Language department. "I have heard great things about St. Michael, and I am excited to be a part of this educational team. I am already planning my lessons for next year!," said Mrs. Phillipps.
Ms. Casey Tomberlin is joining our Theology department. Most of our families know Ms. Tomberlin from her time as a youth minister at Christ the King. Her passion and her joy for her faith will be a great addition to our staff. Ms. Tomberlin will also assume the responsibility of being our Cheer team moderator. She will work with Coach Gellington. Ms. Tomberlin reflected on her new role within our community in this way: "St. Michael is a very special place, I am beyond excited to become a part of the community. I can’t wait to see and meet the students I will be encountering in the Fall and I will be praying for this community as that day gets closer. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a Cardinal."
Mrs. Leigh Walker will join our Aegis program as a part-time instructor. Mrs. Walker has also worked in the Baldwin County School system for over twenty-five years. Her experience will be a great addition to our program. "At the heart of St. Michael's mission are the same values I hold dear.. aspiring students to become scholars, leaders, and disciples of Christ. I don't think it was coincidence that led me to leave one path and start another. In Isaiah, I read, 'At the right time, I, the Lord, will make it happen.' I know that God has opened this door for me at St. Michael so I can continue to serve others. I look forward to being a part of the Cardinal family this fall."
We will hire a few more teachers between now and the end of the school year. The 2023/2024 faculty is going to bring experience, expertise, and passion for teaching to our students on a daily basis. It is a great time to be a Cardinal!
