The St. Michael Catholic High School Model United Nations (UN) Team competed at the 15th Annual University of Alabama Model UN (ALMUN) Conferencewhere the team won nine awards, including the conference’s top honor.
On Friday, February 17th, 2023, 15 St. Michael students traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to participate in the 15th Annual University of Alabama Conference, competing against 200 delegates from 12 Alabama and Mississippi schools, including such Model UN powerhouses as Loveless Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) and Bob Jones High School. Through the conference, the students served as working diplomats, addressing
such timely issues as protection of journalists in conflict zones, preventing food-borne diseases, and promoting nuclear weapons disarmament.
As a result of their research, committee participation, and country representation, the Saint Michael students received nine awards, the second most among participating schools. Jack Garrison earned a Position Paper Award for his research and writing skills. Jeb Bathrick won one of the seven Best Delegate Awards presented at the conference, the highest individual speaking award. Judah McAleer earned an Outstanding Delegate Award, the second highest award designation, while Conner Brown, William Erickson, and Jack Garrison each won an Honorable Mention Award. Sophie Musselman and John Newman each won a Verbal Commendation.
In addition, the entire St. Michael Model UN Team was recognized with the Best Delegation Award, the conference’s highest honor, for the second year in a row. This recognition is in addition to the Best Delegation Runner-Up Award the team won in its first time competing at the Arkansas Model UN Conference in November. So far, the team has won 49 awards, the most awards the team has won in a single year.
