Faustin Weber, principal of St. Michael Catholic High School, is pleased to announce the school has hired Miss Gabrielle Smith as its second theology teacher, thereby completing the teaching staff for the school’s second year.
Mr. Weber explains the school’s choice: “I’ve been interviewing for this position since January, seeking two traits for this important position: A person with an agile mind, with a love for theology, as evidenced by a sterling academic record at a Catholic university, and also, a person on fire to serve the Lord, active in youth ministry and retreats, with a passion to bring that to our students here.”
“Miss Smith is that person. She graduated with two degrees from Spring Hill College, one in theology, the other in Hispanic studies, and was honored by the school as their top student in both majors. She was prefect of a sodality at the College which encouraged women to deepen their Catholic faith, organizing opportunities for service, formation, social gatherings and adoration of the Eucharist. She was president of the Spring Hill Awakening program, which organized retreats for students. She’s been deeply committed to service, volunteering for various homeless ministries, St. Mary’s Home for teen girls, and teaching in ESL programs for immigrant children. She’s been a sacristan for daily Mass at St. Joseph’s chapel. For all of these reasons, Spring Hill College named her the recipient of “Ad Majorem Dei Glorium” Award, given to a student or faculty member who best exemplifies Jesuit ideals in word and deed. We think she’s going to be a dynamic presence here at St. Michael, joining up with our current theology teacher and Campus Minister, Phillip Martin. “
Smith is excited about the opportunity: “I am more than thrilled to begin my time at St. Michael's, knowing that the Lord is calling me to encounter him in new and powerful ways. Looking back, I feel that I have been prepared for this step of my mission through all I have experienced and learned. I look forward to learning from my students and fellow teachers and experiencing a newfound love for the Church through them.”
Miss Smith will begin in August. Born in Pensacola, she has lived most of her life in Birmingham, Al, where she has been an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
