St. Michael has hired Jon Hall to be its first full time science teacher and chairperson of the science department.
Mr. Hall is currently the coordinator of the “STEAM” program (“Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math”) at Marist High School in Atlanta and has been a high school teacher just over fifteen years, the majority of which have been in Catholic high schools. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology from the University of Illinois and a Master of Science degree in Pharmacological and Physiological Sciences from the University of Chicago. He has also worked in the field of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and as a researcher in the department of Physiology at Emory University.
“I can’t overstate how important this hire is for us,“ says Faustin Weber, principal of St. Michael. “Mr. Hall taught freshman Physics and A.P. Physics at Pope John Paul II High School in Nashville when I was headmaster there, so I know him personally. He’s smart, hard working, and committed to his students. He possesses a dynamic vision of what a good high school science program looks like and is eager to help us build that here. In our first year, we’ll take advantage of his considerable expertise by asking him to teach both Freshman Physics and Chemistry, and will gradually transition him to a full-time Physics and Engineering position as our school grows in size. I am confident he will be a real leader not just in science, but the entire academic program. “
Mr. Hall is equally enthusiastic: “I am grateful for and humbled by the opportunity to be among the first faculty at St. Michael. I look forward to working with Mr. Weber once again. Our goals for the science program are the same, and I am confident that together we will be able to develop the best science curriculum possible: one that the students find interesting, meaningful, and engaging, one that allows students to be creative, and one that incorporates the best, research-based ideas into what science education should look like in the 21st century.”
Mr. Hall is a life long Catholic. He enjoys running, biking and backpacking, and hopes to begin a cross country program at St. Michael in the not too distant future.
