St. Michael is pleased to announce that it has hired Mrs. Laura Gamard for a full time teaching position in history, effective the week of Thanksgiving.
Mrs. Gamard earned a B.A. in History and a M.A. in Teaching in Social Studies, both from Duke University. From 1992-1999 she taught A.P. U.S. History, A.P. Psychology, World History, Geography and other subjects in North Carolina high schools and Hoover High School in Birmingham while her husband, Dr. Chris Gamard, completed his medical training. Upon the births of their daughters, she decided to take a hiatus on teaching for a time, even as she became active in various civic and charitable agencies in the Fairhope community, including the Children’s Dance Theater, the Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation and the Morgan-Thompson Foundation. She has also served as chairperson of numerous fund-raisers to support Fairhope schools over the years.
“We are blessed to have someone of Mrs. Gamard’s experience and stature join our faculty, ” says Faustin Weber, school principal. “I believe she’ll be a great gift to our students—she’s smart, well educated, and hard working. She loves kids, as evidenced by her exceptional volunteerism in support of local schools, and as a mother of two daughters, she understands the family dynamics of raising teenagers.”
Mrs. Gamard is equally excited to become part of the faculty here: “I am delighted by the opportunity to join such a warm, welcoming, special community that is St. Michael. I am passionate about teaching because sending educated citizens out into the world prepared to make a difference is a challenge and a privilege that I embrace. I look forward to this new adventure.”
Laura and her husband, Chris, have been married for 23 years. Their oldest daughter, Caroline, is a freshman at Duke University, whereas their second daughter, Catherine, attends Fairhope High School. They are active members of St. James Episcopal Church.
