St. Michael is pleased to announce that Mrs. Mary Beth Andrews has agreed to become the school’s second history teacher, scheduled to teach A.P. American History, American History and World History when the school opens for its second year in August, 2017.
A native of Mobile and a McGill-Toolen graduate, Andrews attended the University of Notre Dame, earning a B.A. in History. She then taught in the Teaching Service program for Inner City Schools at Aquinas High School in the Bronx, New York, before returning to Notre Dame, this time to earn a law degree. She practiced as an anti-trust and litigation attorney, both in Washington and Cleveland, before returning home to raise a family.
“Mrs. Andrews has taken a non-traditional route to become a teacher here, “ principal Faustin Weber reflects, “but I think she’ll be a great fit. She’s smart, quick-witted and well read, the daughter of a history professor, immersed in the stories of our past and able to connect those stories in an authentic way to the present. We had interest from number of highly qualified persons for this position, but I think Mrs. Andrews will bring something very special to our students. “
Andrews is looking forward to it: “I am filled with gratitude and excitement for this unique opportunity to teach history at St. Michael. In the first year the school has lived up to its lofty visions. With that basis, I look forward to communicating the importance of history and the stories that bind our global community. I truly believe that it is through studying history our children develop the empathy, curiosity, understanding and factual bedrock to make a difference in our world.”
Mary Beth and her late husband, Barry, have three children: Maeve who attends Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN and Rory and Patrick who attend St. Michael. They are members of Christ the King parish.
