Before a "standing room only" crowd and a raucous, spirited student section, the St. Michael Cardinals boy's varsity team basketball team nipped rival Bayside Academy 36-35 in Mullek gym on Friday night. It was the first area win in the history of the boys' program, in this, the first year of varsity basketball.
Sophomore Jake Kokoszka hit the game winning shot with 1.5 seconds left. Jake and junior Grant Murray led the team in scoring with 12 points each.
The boys' game followed a thrilling game between the two girls' teams, with the Cardinals losing in overtime.
The boys' junior varsity began the evening strong with a 2 point victory over Bayside as Matthew Guepet calmly sank two free throws at the end of the game for the victory.
