Congratulations to Coach David Offerle, who won his 400th career game as a head girls' coach with the Cardinal's victory over Mobile Christian on Friday night.
"400 wins is an incredible accomplishment," says St. Michael Athletic Director, Paul Knapstein. " I congratulate Coach Offerle for this feat. Many of you may not this, but Coach Offerle graduated from Memphis Catholic the year before I started teaching there. When he was in college he was an assistant coach at our rival school, St. Benedict. I had the privilege of watching Coach O develop into the successful leader he is today. We are grateful he has accomplished this milestone with us."
Offerle was characteristically modest about his achievement: "I'd like to thank all the players that worked so hard to help me amass this many victories," Offerle says. "Without their help none of this would be possible."
At assembly today, the student body gave Coach Offerle a warm round of applause. "Usually, if you hear about a coach who's won four hundred games, " said principal Faustin Weber to the students, "you'd think of an old guy nearing the end of his career. But Coach Offerle is relatively young. He started head coaching varsity ball very early, at the age of 23. He's been an incredible blessing to this school, both on the basketball court and in the classroom."
Offerle won 322 games as a head coach in the Memphis area and has now won 78 games at St. Michael.
The Lady Cardinals are currently 15-10. Area play begins this week.
