Girls Basketball Wins Season Opener vs. Baker
The St. Michael girls basketball team won its season opener by a score of 43-31 against Baker High School on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at the St. Michael gym.
Freshman forward Sam Kokoszka led the way with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. She hit four of her six attempts from beyond the arc, including making three in the first quarter alone -- a girls’ school record for three-pointers in a single quarter.
While running the offense, junior guard Tatum Hoffman had five assists and four steals. Senior guard Bailey McDonald added five steals, and freshman center Caroline Callahan scored eight points and collected 12 rebounds in the winning effort for St. Michael.
Baker, as a non-region opponent for the Cardinals, competes in 7A. Tuesday night marked the first meeting between these two schools at the girls varsity level.
Under seventh-year head coach David Offerle, the Cardinals will hope to build on last season’s 16-11 record (including an 11-3 mark in home contests). The team competes in 4A Area 1. Coach Offerle won his 400th career game as a head coach near the end of the 2021-22 season on Senior Night vs. Mobile Christian.
The next Cardinals girls varsity game is tonight at home vs. Robertsdale at 6:30 p.m. following the JV boys at 5 p.m.
