We look forward to our third year as a school! Here are some of the changes our students and families will notice from last year (w/pics):
What about the library?
Because of the vast amounts of information accessible to students through smart phones and laptop computers, the traditional view of high school libraries, understood as a repository of books and reference materials, is increasingly anachronistic. Instead, high school librarians are best viewed as providers of services, rather than as keepers of materials. “How do we help students access high quality materials online?” “How do we help them distinguish a reliable source from an advocacy site?” “What techniques do students need to learn to do good research?” and the like become the crucial questions. At St. Michael, Mrs. Loegler is developing online resources and tools to assist our students along these lines. In addition, over the course of the fall, Mrs. Loegler will be establishing two “Take one, Give one” reading “kiosks” around the school, similar to what you might see in city parks, so as to encourage casual reading in our students. It will be fun to watch how this new model develops in our young school!
