St. Michael is happy to announce it has hired Mrs. Amy Lyon to be its Spanish teacher for the 2022-23 school year. She replaces Mrs. Lindley, who is moving to Minnesota to be with her son’s family and her grandchild. Lyon will teach primarily Spanish I and II, and will also assistant coach in our cross country and track programs.
Lyon is native to the area, a student at McGill-Toolen and Spring Hill College, where she earned a B.A. in Spanish in Secondary Education. After college, she taught in Quito, Ecuador for two years; then moved to New Orleans, where she taught Spanish at Brother Martin Catholic High School for two years; then to Buenos Aires, Argentina for a year, and then to Melbourne, Australia, where she taught English as a second language for eight years. While in Melbourne, she also earned a M.A. in Applied Linguistics at the University of New England.
“We think Mrs. Lyon’s experiences abroad will be a real blessing to our students,” says St. Michael principal, Faustin Weber. “She speaks with native-like fluency, and her broad international experience will help bring context and flair to her classes. Even so, she’s a native south Alabamian, and is coming home so that she and her husband can raise their young child with her extended family here. We’d be hard-pressed to imagine a better fit, given the huge hole created by Mrs. Lindley’s absence.”
Lyon is ready to get going: “When I visited the school, I was very impressed with the school and the culture here, and I can't wait to be a part of the Cardinal community, both as a teacher and as an assistant cross-country and track coach. After more than 10 years away—in South America, New Orleans, and finally Australia—I'm excited to return to Alabama to teach Spanish at a Catholic high school.”
While a student at Spring Hill, she was twice All-Conference and once All-Region as a cross-country runner. At McGill, she was the Optimist Club Cross-County Runner of the Year in 2003. She was also active in Campus Ministry, president of the Pro-Life Club and editor of the McGill yearbook, the Vespidae.
She and her husband Agustin have a nine month old daughter, Alma, and worship at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mobile.
