We believe that the creativity the Arts inspire, the emotions they evoke, the structure and discipline they require, the community and camaraderie they help form, all shape students in a profoundly positive way. Excellent Fine Arts programs create joyful schools, liberate students from the myopia of the literal, deepen their sensitivity to nuance and subtlety, and open them to listen more carefully to the prompting of God’s grace within them. Good music programs elevate school liturgies and other formal school events, admissions activities and school celebrations.
For these reasons, the Arts play a central role in the life of St. Michael Catholic High School. All students are required to take a minimum of two years in the Arts as a requirement of their freshman and sophomore year. They have the option of taking the arts as electives in the 3rd and 4th year.
It doesn’t matter if a student has “talent” in the arts--sometimes, they discover talents they didn’t know they had! But if not, it’s helpful to remember that not all of us are athletes, but it’s healthy for all of us to exercise! Artist or not, musician or not, thespian or not, the arts touch students in a way that the more rational subjects cannot, leading them to develop balanced, whole selves.
